Discovering Tuscany: A Road Trip Adventure from Luxembourg to Italy and Switzerland

Setting off on a road trip is exciting, especially when it's a journey to a place as beautiful as Tuscany! Our recent road trip from Luxembourg to Tuscany was incredible, packed with vibrant culture, delicious food, and breathtaking scenery. Travelling by car allowed us to explore hidden gems along the way and fully appreciate the beauty of this region. Are you ready for a journey unlike any other? Let's dive into our experience!

Let Trip To Tuscany Begin: A Long Drive to Pisa

The beginning of our adventure involved a long drive—over 12 hours from Luxembourg to Pisa. To break up the journey, we chose to stop in Lucerne, Switzerland. It was a wise decision! A quick stroll along Lake Lucerne rewarded us with stunning views and a peaceful atmosphere. We also strolled through its charming streets and admired the beautiful Chapel Bridge, a structure dating back to the 14th century.

Refreshed and energized, we continued our journey, excited for our first destination—Pisa!

Exploring Pisa

After arriving in Pisa, we checked into our cosy B&B for a three-night stay. Our first day was all about the famous Leaning Tower, the adjoining Square of Miracles and exploration of the historical centre of the city. Of course, the main attraction of Pisa is the tower: standing in front of it, I was amazed by its unique tilt and impressive architecture. Did you know that the tower leans at an angle of about 3.97 degrees?

The following day, we set off for a delightful day trip to Lucca. This charming nearby town is famous for its well-preserved Renaissance walls and cobblestone streets. Also, there are plenty of museums and churches to visit, with some of them allowing access to viewpoints with incredibly beautiful panoramic views of this medieval town.

From Pisa to Florence: A Culinary Stop in Chianti

After our time in Pisa, we drove to Florence, but first, we had to stop in the stunning Chianti region. Dario Cecchini, a renowned butcher, was on our must-visit list, and we could not leave without trying his legendary restaurant.

Our lunch was like a dream, featuring great meats cooked to perfection and served with a side of local Chianti red wine—a highlight for any food enthusiast.

According to Dario, his restaurant serves around 600 kilograms of meat a day, showcasing just how popular it is!

Discovering Florence and Beyond

Arriving in Florence, we settled into our hotel for four nights, ready to soak up all the city has to offer.

Florence is a treasure trove of history and art! We made an ambitious list of must-see attractions like the stunning Duomo, the Uffizi Gallery, home to works by Michelangelo and Botticelli, and the iconic Ponte Vecchio. Walking through this city felt like being in a living museum, with stunning architecture at every turn. Every day was a mix of art, history, and tasty dinners.

We also took day trips to San Gimignano, known for its medieval towers—14 still stand today—creating a stunning skyline. In Volterra, we explored ancient Etruscan walls and admired the stunning views of the classic Tuscan paysages.

Relaxation at Chiancino Terme

After our action-packed days in Florence, we headed to Chiancino Terme, where we spent two nights in a lovely hotel with a fantastic spa. We treated ourselves to the thermal baths, indulging in this experience twice daily. After all the exploring, it was the perfect way to recharge!

During our days in this town, we visited both Montepulciano and Pienza, soaking in the stunning vistas of the Val d'Orcia region. Both towns are picturesque and filled with charm. Walking through the narrow, winding streets of Pienza, known for its pecorino cheese, was delightful and felt like stepping back in time.

Siena’s New Year Celebration

Our adventure continued in Siena, where we spent another three nights. The historic centre is vibrant, and we loved wandering through the streets, culminating in a visit to the famous Piazza del Campo.

Welcome in the New Year 2025 here was a highlight of our trip, surrounded by locals and other travellers sharing laughter and joy as we stepped into 2025.

We took a day trip to Monteriggioni, a breathtaking medieval walled village, and Castellina in Chianti, rich with heritage and local wines. Tuscany truly captivates with its blend of culture, history, and stunning vistas!

A Relaxing Return Through Switzerland

As our trip neared its end, we decided to extend our journey with a two-night stay in Lugano, Switzerland, in a cosy studio. Riding our bikes by the lake and enjoying the scenery was everything we needed to unwind. We also went to Locarno, where we spent quite a lot of time at the thermal baths, blending relaxation with breathtaking views.

Reflections on Our Journey

Our road trip from Luxembourg to Tuscany and back was filled with exploration, delicious food, and shared experiences. We drove through breathtaking landscapes, absorbed rich history, and savoured culinary delights at every stop. From the enchanting streets of Pisa to the rolling hills of Chianti, every moment was magical.

If you're thinking about planning a trip like this, our ten-day Tuscany itinerary will inspire your adventure. Don't miss the chance to explore charming towns, try out incredible food, and take time to relax and enjoy the surroundings!
